[Drilling], undated -- Profile to a kanat (Iranian word Ghanat). First step is location of water table of source-then available fall to point of discharge. Construction starts at lower end. This series of 7 slides (the first 6) prepared by A.D. Farmanfarma of Iran in 1951. Original photos direct from Iran from F's brother (Dr. Kauch F., Tajerish, Teheron Iran). Not to be used for publication without permission, 1951 -- Parallel kanats. Note where repairs had to be made by tunneling around failure. Irrigated land in picture receives water from other higher kanats, 1951 -- The near kanat attempted to steal water from far kanat but was stopped by legal procedure. However there are no definite ground-water laws. Note repairs here also, 1951 -- Upper end of a kanat showing junction of 2 tributaries, 1951 -- Pottery linings for use in soft, caving formations. Just large enough for a man to crawl thru. Of low strength-breakage high. F. says that one kanat his family built-10 miles long cost about $100,000-up to 90 meters deep. Work on as other labor requirements fell off-a kind of WPA. In this case water was developed in 5 yrs. work, 1951 -- Kanats supplying water for irrigation and a village near the Zagros Mtns, Iran. Grapes main crop; note the surfacing at extreme left of the kanat in foreground. Taken from Life, 1951-06-18 -- Water witching. A. Geyser, a Swiss at Wheatridge, 1941-09-25 -- Water witching. A.
